Shepparton

We arrived in Shepparton like two weary pilgrims to Mecca.  We thought we had come to the land of milk and honey, we quickly found out that was not the case.  We found cheap accommodation at a caravan park near Tatura, west of Shepparton.  We spent over a week heading to the CVGT office daily to try and get picking work.  We quickly found out there were hundreds of other backpackers like us waiting for work.

We had done some work months before we arrived, applying for work at orchards that had accommodation on site and steady work.  Some how it seemed we applied either too early or too late.  After the first week of waiting we decided to be overly aggressive and go first thing in the morning to the CVGT office and put our names on the "list".  After sitting around town for a few hours we headed back in to the office and managed to catch the eye of one of the blokes in charge.  He brought us in and within minutes we were on our way to a job 60 km away in Tongala to pick pears.

He gave us the address of the farm and a caravan park nearby (even calling first to make sure they had an opening) and we headed out. After checking in to the caravan park in Tongala, we called up the farm and they told us to come over and check it out. Upon first sight it seemed like an overrun, really small, family farm; these turned out to be approximately correct. The place is quite overrun, leaving us in constant fear of snakes in the tall grass, and the place is fairly small, though the family keeps lots of different animals and many different fruits and vegetables. The next day we started picking pears for $30 a bin, when not playing fetch with one of the dogs, though only got two days before it started raining.

Still not making much money, hoping the coming weeks will bring more consistent work.

Blue Mountains

This one time, we went to the Blue Mountains. We knew that they were supposed to be very pretty, but they don't like to tell you where the free campsites are. After finally finding one, we woke up in the morning to find out that we were in a cloud.

We went to the lookouts anyway, but it all looked the same.
After hoping that it would dissipate, we gave up and found another campsite for the night, hoping that the next day would be better. Luckily, it did clear up and we were able to go on a hike from Wentworth Falls. It was really beautiful and the views, especially of the waterfall, were amazing. After the hike, we were pretty tired, so we quickly checked out the Three Sisters, one of the main features/attractions, and then headed back out to camp. The Sisters were cool and all, but I don't really think they are the best part, its really all about the view behind them

Byron to Crescent Head

We left Byron on Monday after getting all our car stuff we went to Ballina, failed at getting the car registered, and so we stayed at a holiday park (expensive caravan park) and went back to the RTA the next day.

After failing to get rego again because the system was down, we decided to keep moving south. We stopped at Corindi Beach to pick up the stuff that we had left there, have a quick lunch at The Shop, then hit the road again. After our expensive experience at the caravan park in Ballina, we decided we needed to find a cheaper option for camping, especially since we weren’t even setting up a tent. Matt found this book referenced online called Camps Australia Wide, but its only sold in a few random shops (and Borders Bookstores), one place being the News Agency in Woolgoolga! The News Agency is a government shop that sells newspapers, cards, tobacco products, and often lottery tickets. We picked up our new bible at the store in Woolgoolga, and tried to find a place nearby, as it was already getting late. We ended up in this little park in Thora that had a couple of other travelers and was definitely a good way to start our free camping adventures.

Wednesday morning, we stopped at McDonalds to get some internet (a common habit on our travels because of its reliability) and found out that there was an RTA office only 15 minutes from where we were. There we were finally able to register the car! After that great success we went to Crescent Head for some great swimming in the river and the ocean. We checked out the headland with a beautiful view and a stunning location for a golf course.

Success!

It turns out that the local IGA grocery store in Byron Bay, does in fact have bagels! And Philadelphia cream cheese! They even had a few different kinds, we went with poppyseed:

Definitely made for a few good meals, even when cooked on a public bbq along the beach.

hitchhiking!

Our first hitchhiking adventure was a success!
200 kms, 4 rides, less than 4 hours (aka shorter than the bus), and totally free!
more to come later...

Why does no one in this forsaken country eat bagels?!
All I want is a bagel...maybe with some nice cream cheese. Apparently this is too much to ask from Australia.

Happy New Year!

Hello! Hope you all had a fantastic new year's eve, I know we did.

We were a bit skeptical that it would actually be good, but it had finally stopped raining and things were looking up. There was a small rainstorm the morning of new years eve, so work was canceled--annoying to miss another day, but it meant that we could go into town (Coffs Harbor) which we don't get to do that often.

Spent the rest of the day hanging out at the caravan park with some of the other pickers and then went out to the local pub with them to celebrate midnight and the new year (see pictures below)! The band was pretty good and played a lot of fun covers.
